چکیده

This paper promotes socially intelligent animated agents for the pedagogical task of English conversation training for native speakers of Japanese. Since student-agent conversations are realized as role-playing interactions, strong requirements are imposed on the agents’ affective and social abilities. As a novel feature, social role awareness is introduced to animated conversational agents, that are by now strong affective reasoners, but otherwise often lack the social competence observed with humans. In particular, humans may easily adjust their behavior depending on their respective role in a social setting, whereas their synthetic pendants tend to be driven mostly by emotions and personality. Our main contribution is the incorporation of a ‘social filter program’ to mental models of animated agents. This program may qualify an agent’s expression of its emotional state by the social context, thereby enhancing the agent’s believability as a conversational partner. Our implemented system is web-based and demonstrates socially aware animated agents in a virtual coffee shop environment. An experiment with our conversation system shows that users consider socially aware agents as more natural than agents that violate conventional practices. Let's Talk Topically with Artificial Agents! - Providing Agents with Humanlike Topic Awareness in Everyday Dialog Situations

Spoken interactions between humans are characterized by coherent sequences of utterances assigning a thematical structure to the whole conversation. Such coherence and the success of a meaningful and flexible dialog are based on the cognitive ability to be aware of the ongoing conversational topic. This paper presents how to enable such topically coherent conversations between humans and intera...

Social Intelligence in Conversational Computer Agents ProSeminar Conceptual Analysis of Thesis Area

I. Introduction The purpose of this work is to endow an embodied conversational computer agent with the ability to establish and maintain an ongoing social relationship with a user. This ability is not only important in entertainment applications (e.g., as in Tamagotchis and Furbies which are specifically designed to establish ongoing relationships with their users) and affect support systems (...

"But let me talk": An Investigation into Teachers' Interaction Patterns in EFL Classrooms

Drawing on Walsh's (2012) idea that boosting learners' contribution and interaction can play a key role in their foreign language learning, this mixed-methods study tried to cast some light on the ways by which teachers, via their choice and use of language, create or block learners' contribution in direct interactions in the classroom. A total of 800-minute recordings of 10 teachers' talks and...
